Angel: 95% of all atomic games begin with 1.Nf3 because it begins a 3 move mate threat
Angel: It wants to head for f7 and d7, where the incidenary explosion will blow up the King
Angel: In atomic, checks and checkmates do not matter, exploding the King comes first
Angel: You will still see some so-called 'checks
Angel: and some atomic mates
Angel: but you can be in chess checkmate and still win the atomic game by checkmating the other king

Angel: After 1.Nf3, there aren't a lot of options for Black
Angel: The most direct threats are Ng5 and Ne5
Angel: For example, if you tried playing this as a Reti in chess
